As if that is the entire content of life…

“See the difference between declaration and situation. People at a party or down by the lakeside on Sunday afternoon, they’re shouting out as if they’re having a good time – and they have no idea of what is going on inside themselves. They have no idea that they are unaware of the existence of actually another world, another life.

Just visit the lakeside resort for a little bit, thousands of people stretched out, splashing in the water, and listen to what they shout out to each other: ‘Bring me back another strawberry soda, the band concert starts playing at two in the afternoon, let’s be there, bet you I can beat you to the edge of the park and back.’

All acting, talking, thinking, living as if what they are doing and what they are living, as if that shouting out about the band concert and the strawberry soda, as if that is the entire content of life.

It is the entire content of his life and her life. Oh yes, and that five-year old boy and that ten-year old girl, they’re hearing all those shouts from parents and friends and passing strangers. They
hear every one of those, and being young, they don’t know that limitation and confinement is being drilled into them with every shout.”
